Singapore for £1

Singapore Airlines has teamed up with Singapore Tourism to offer a ‘Fabulous Singapore Stopover' package, starting at £1 for the first night stay in Singapore. The package includes accommodation, free admission to attractions, discount vouchers, transfers, and a ‘Hop on-Hop off' bus.

The package also includes free admission to attractions including Sentosa Island, Singapore Zoo, Malay Heritage Centre, National Orchid Garden, Peranakan Museum, Singapore River Bumboat Tour and Jurong Bird Park.

Other goodies in the package include a 50 per cent dining discount at designated food outlets at selected hotels, a free SingTel Prepaid Mobile hi!Card, which customers can use to make calls and Singapore Airlines Boarding Pass Privileges, which offer discounts on shopping, dining, sightseeing tours, tourist attractions and car rentals when customers present their Singapore Airlines boarding passes.

This attractive package is valid for travel and hotel stay from 15 April to 30 September 2009. At US$1 for the first night, travelers can choose to stay from a list of six hotels. For a little more indulgence, they can also choose to stay in other hotels at first night rates of US$20, US$30 and US$40 respectively. These special first night rates are based per person on a twin-share basis.

Eurostar sales down

It has been announced that the number of Eurostar passengers dropped by 11.5% in the first three months of 2009 compared to the same period in 2008. The high-speed train operator blamed the decrease in sales on the Eurotunnel fire as well as the global economic downturn.

However, Chief Executive Richard Brown is confident that the company will not be dented too much, saying: "The downturn may be depressing business travel but it is having the opposite effect on the leisure market, with more people wanting to get away from it all to relax, recharge the batteries and spend time with loved ones."

LD Lines launch largest ferry from Dover

French company LD Lines will introduce the largest ferry to operate on short Channel crossing routes between the UK and France.

The new high-speed catamaran, capable of carrying 1,200 passengers and crew and up to 417 cars, will be launched on the Dover-Boulogne route on 29 May.

Dover-Boulogne fares start from £24 one way and day returns from £28 for a car and four passengers.

Up to four daily return sailings will operate.

Luton Airport to charge for passenger drop off

Motorists using Luton Airport's refurbished drop-off zone will soon have to pay for the privilege. Airport operator Abertis plans to introduce a charge of £1 for up to 10 minutes in the drop-off zone by May 2009. Barriers at the zone's exit will help enforce the levy.

Drivers who want to avoid the charge will be able to leave passengers at the mid-term car park, from where a free shuttle buss regularly ferries passengers to the nearby terminal.

Cardiff and Belfast airports are also run by Abertis, and there are concerns the fee could soon spread.

Thailand travel alert

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is advising against travel to Bangkok after a state of emergency was declared in the Thai capital. Anti-government protestors have taken over parts of the city, with British nationals already in Bangkok being advised to stay indoors.

The protests are another blow to Thailand's tourism industry, which was just starting to recover from last November's extended closures of Bangkok International Airport.
